The most well-known version of the Balvenie 12 Year Old is the DoubleWood, a legendary Speyside single malt renowned for its honeyed complexity and smoothness. It is commonly regarded as a standard for "cask finishing," a procedure that the distillery invented.
It should come as no surprise that Balvenie DoubleWood is matured in two different types of oak casks! Prior to being finished in first fill European oak Oloroso sherry butts for nine more months, it was first aged in refill American oak casks. Since its 1993 introduction, the expression has gained some notoriety as a whisky. This deep and rich dram, even at 12, is a great representation of what the Balvenie distillery is capable of producing.
