It should come as no surprise that Balvenie DoubleWood is matured in two different types of oak casks! Prior to being finished in first fill European oak Oloroso sherry butts for nine more months, it was first aged in refill American oak casks. Since its 1993 introduction, the expression has gained some notoriety as a whisky. This deep and rich dram, even at 12, is a great representation of what the Balvenie distillery is capable of producing.
The nose Spices mingled with a supple, gritty nuttiness. Grapes with honeyed sultanas. Very appealing.
Sweet on the palate, with a nice body. The bourbon flavours emerge, along with a trace of balanced peat that is subtly present in the substratum and mild spice and vanilla. Additionally, the dried fruit blends in so beautifully with the bourbon aromas, along with almonds, nutmeg, and cinnamon.
Finish: spicy, sweet, and a little drying.
All in all, a classic that is always enjoyable to rewatch. (This single malt's sweetness can also persuade someone who doesn't drink whisky to change their mind.)
