Uncharted area can occasionally be discovered in your own backyard. We have been purchasing tobacco from the DR for many years, but we have never dealt with andullo tobacco, a rather uncommon, centuries-old method that entails tightly coiling cured tobacco leaves in "yaguas," or palm tree pods, to allow them to ferment. The result of this technique is a tobacco that is black, leathery, and has a strong, sweet flavour. This exotic tobacco is blended by CAO Mortal Coil inside a USA Broadleaf wrapper to create a distinctive and very flavoured cigar.
First Third: Dark Fruit & Strong Spice
Primary Notes: A strong beginning of burnt oak and black pepper.
Accents: A rich, intense sweetness that is reminiscent of molasses or raisins appears.
Experience: As soon as it is lit, the Andullo tobacco produces an earthy, gritty base.
Second Third: Black cherry and savoury leather
Principal Notes: A rich leather and creamy espresso core replaces the mild spice.
Accents: Unsweetened black cherry and a savoury, almost "smoked meat" flavour.
Experience: This is the "sweet spot" where the distinct fermenting process coats the palate with an extremely thick, greasy feeling.
Last Third: Earth & Bittersweet Cocoa
Primary Notes: Damp soil and bittersweet chocolate make the profile deeper and more powerful.
Accents: A smoky, charred finish with a reappearance of the black pepper.
Experience: This is where the strength peaks; the finish is robust and lengthy, with a lingering, syrupy aftertaste of dark fruit.
