One of the most well-known and recognisable Cuban cigars worldwide is the Romeo y Julieta Churchill. Named for British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill, who made this particular size (vitola) his own trademark, it has a traditional medium-bodied profile that both beginners and seasoned enthusiasts adore.
Background and Relationship to Winston Churchill
In 1875, the genuine Cuban brand was established. Early in the 20th century, it became extremely well-known throughout the world thanks to Don "Pepín" Rodríguez, who was a pioneer in the use of striking cigar bands. After a famous trip to Havana in 1946, Sir Winston Churchill developed a strong affection for the brand. Romeo y Julieta formally approved the use of his name on their iconic "Julieta No. 2" factory vitola by the middle of the 1950s, establishing the "Churchill" format that is currently a standard in the industry.
First Third: The Overview: Flowery & Creamy
Light vanilla cream, roasted almonds, fragrant hay, and clean cedar are the main notes.
The "Cuban Twang" is characterised by a subtle sense of leather and a particular, beautiful floral sweetness that enthusiasts frequently refer to as rose water or cherry water.
Retrohale: Very smooth, with a hint of sweet cocoa and hardly any spice.
Second Third: The Heart: Rich & Complex
As the cherry moves down the long barrel, the cigar hits its stride, settling into a firm medium body. The bright, sweet characteristics from the opening transition into deeper, darker, and more savoury elements.
Dominant Notes: Roasted espresso beans, rich dark chocolate, and earthiness.
The Nutty Transition: The light almond note from the start matures into a heavier walnut and hazelnut profile. The cedar wood tones deepen, becoming much more pronounced.
Retrohale: A gentle white pepper spice starts to emerge, waking up the senses without ever turning aggressive
Final Third: The Grand Finale: Intense & Robust
Dominant Notes: Heavy cedar, dark leather, damp wood, and strong, pure Cuban tobacco flavour.
The Sweet Return: Interestingly, the floral sweetness from the first third often makes a brief comeback, tasting closer to dark molasses, dried figs, or burnt caramel.
The Finish: The baking spices and black pepper intensity peak, leaving a long, rich, and warming finish that lingers beautifully on the palate
