Gawith Hoggarth Brown Twist (also known as Brown Irish Twist) is a member of the Rope / Twist tobacco family and represents one of the oldest, strongest, and most traditional methods of British tobacco manufacture.

Rather than being sliced into loose ribbons, the raw leaves are hand-spun into a thick, dense rope using machines that are 150 years old. This structure previously permitted 19th-century sailors and coal miners to cut off chunks to chew when smoking was outlawed. Today, experienced pipe smokers cut the rope into thin "coins" for smoking in a pipe.
