The former Partagas factory is the one structure in Havana that cigar enthusiasts are most excited about. It is located in the centre of the city at No. 520 Industria Street, directly behind the Capitol building.
Don Jaime Partagas opened the plant in 1845, and it remained in business until a few years ago. Plans to turn it into a cigar museum are already underway, and it is now shuttered. Nonetheless, the ground level Partagas store is still open and highly recommended.
A Partagas' rich, earthy flavour makes it instantly recognised. A variety of filler and binder tobaccos cultivated in the Vuelta Abajo zone and picked for their distinctively rich flavour and aroma give its blend its distinctive character.
Partagas are available in a variety of sizes and shapes, including the Lusitania and the 8-9-8, which gets its name from the way the cigar is packed in its box.
The Serie D No.4, a robusto size that was a part of the renowned Partagas alphabet series that began in the 1930s, is arguably the most well-known of all the Partagas. The Partagas Serie P No.2, a Pirámide that was introduced to the lineup in 2005, has quickly emerged as the preferred cigar among those who enjoy full-bodied Havanas. The alphabet series was once again expanded in 2011 with the introduction of the heavy ring gauge Serie E No.2 and the Serie D No.5. The small D.6 was the most recent addition to the line, arriving in 2014.
