The village of San Juan y Martinez, located in the centre of the Vuelta Abajo zone, is where Hoyo de Monterrey originated. The Hoyo de Monterrey plantation, one of the famous Vegas de Primera, may be approached through a gate on the town's main square that reads "Hoyo de Monterrey. Jose Gener. 1960."

The term "hoyo" literally means "hole" and refers to the plantation's low-lying location on the rich banks of the San Juan y Martinez River. In 1865, Jose Gener, a Spaniard from Tarragona, placed his vega's name on a Habanos brand.
