The origins of Cohiba cigars
While most Cuban cigar brands were initially privately owned before being nationalised following the Cuban revolution, Cohiba is exceptional in that it was established as a Cuban national enterprise following the revolution.
Cohiba cigars began as Fidel Castro's own brand, providing cigars exclusively to Castro for personal enjoyment or as gifts to guests.
The narrative of the original Cohiba Cigars, as told by Castro, begins one day in the mid-1960s with one of his bodyguards smoking a strong scented cigar. Castro inquired as to what he was smoking, to which the man said that it was not a branded cigar but a present from a buddy who was a local torcedor.
After smoking the cigar, Castro contacted the designer and ordered that they be produced for his own use. The El Laguito Factory created the cigars for Castro using unbranded tobacco.
