Montecristo is the most well-known and respected Habanos brand in the world. For many Habanos smokers, it serves as a benchmark against which other brands are compared. The name comes from the hero of Alexandre Dumas' famous novel 'The Count of Montecristo,' which was a popular choice among Torcedores (cigar manufacturers) at the plant where it was founded in 1935. The first Montecristo size range consisted of a restricted number of options numbered 1 through 5.
