Romeo y Julieta, named after William Shakespeare's tragic lovers, first appeared as a Habano in 1875.
Don 'Pepin' Rodriguez, a skilled promoter who was among the first to grasp the potential of the cigar band, led the brand to international recognition in the early years of the twentieth century. 20,000 distinct bands were employed in production during his heyday.
Winston Churchill became a fan of the company. Following his visit to Havana in 1946, not only was his name immortalised on a band, but it also served to describe the marque's most famous size - Romeo y Julieta Churchill.
The name has been used in two additional sizes in the twenty-first century. The first, Short Churchill, was a robusto size that had been missing from the range until 2006. Wide Churchills, which debuted as the 21st Festival del Habano in 2010, offers a 55 ring gauge to reflect the demand among fans for stouter girth vitolas.
Romeo y Julieta is a traditional medium-bodied Habano with a balanced and aromatic blend of chosen filler and binder leaves from the Vuelta Abajo zone.
Romeo y Julieta is still as well-known around the world as it ever was, and it has the most extensive selection of lengthy filler sizes of any Habano brand.
