The premium, medium-bodied Blackened S84 Shade to Black by Drew Estate is the result of a well-known partnership between Jonathan Drew, Rob Dietrich (Master Distiller of BLACKENED American Whisky), and James Hetfield of Metallica. The trio created the S84 to provide a smoother, more approachable experience without compromising fundamental depth in response to the popularity of their hard, all-maduro M81 release.

While "Shade to Black" alludes to the song Fade to Black, the name honours Metallica's 1984 sophomore album Ride the Lightning.

First Third: Soft Spice & Cream nButtery leather, fresh cedar wood, and rich heavy cream are the dominant notes. Undertones: The retrohale has a very subtle white pepper tickle. Experience: Easy draw, mild-to-medium start, and exceptionally smooth.

Sweet Cocoa Core in the Second Third Sweet dark cherry, toasted almonds, and milk chocolate are the main notes. Undertones: The gloomy US state of Connecticut A little earthy sweetness is added when broadleaf binder starts to emerge. Experience: A very fragrant, room-filling smoke is released as the body thickens into a solid medium.

Last Third: Earth Dominant & Dark Coffee Notes: Rich baking spices, charred oak, and fresh espresso beans. Undertones: A faint trace of dark molasses and a reappearance of mild black pepper. Experience: The finish is dominated by the Nicaraguan and Pennsylvania maduro fillers, which finish on a strong and incredibly pleasing note without being harsh.
